San Diego is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest in the United States. It had a population of 1,307,402 as per the 2010 census. The urban area of San Diego extends beyond the city limits and had a population of 2,880,000 in 2010. The state’s as well as the city’s beauty services industry is of a reasonably big size. To give an indication the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos metropolitan area had 2,940 hairstylists and cosmetologists, 2140 nail technicians (manicurists) and 260 estheticians as per the May 2010 Occupational Employment Statistics of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Before looking at esthetician schools in San Diego, let’s look at the licensure requirements for estheticians in California. You need to obtain a license from the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, Department of Consumer Affairs to practice as an esthetician in the state. The basic requirement for appearing for the licensing exam is that the candidate should have completed an esthetician training course of at least 600 hours from an approved esthetician school in California.
The licensure examination is conducted in two parts- written and practical. The written part of two hours is composed of of 100 multiple-choice questions. The practical examination assesses the candidate’s ability to:
- Perform proper disinfection and sanitation techniques, consumer protection and safety.
- Set up necessary equipment, materials and supplies
- Preparation of models
- Perform basic esthetics skills

Accredited esthetician schools in San Diego
It is important for aspiring estheticians from San Diego to enroll in an accredited school. This will make them eligible to appear for the state licensure examination. As of writing this article, there are five approved esthetician schools in San Diego. Evaluate them individually and choose the one that fits you. As accreditation requires periodic renewal, it is important to check with the Barber and Cosmetology Board as to the currency of the accreditation.
