If you have ever spent time at a day spa or dermatologist’s office, you have probably either visited or heard of an esthetician. An esthetician is trained and licensed to provide expert skin care, including cleaning, facials, applying makeup and performing other skin care procedures. Like any other profession, there are many different schools where you can get training and certification as an esthetician, but there are some schools that are more highly regarded than others are.

Here are the top esthetician schools in the United States:

Esthetic Institute

Located in Virginia, the Esthetic Institute is dedicated to esthetician classes, including state board certification preparation. The State Council licenses the Esthetic Institute for Higher Education and claims to have over 95 percent pass rate for the state board exam. The program also offers laser technician certification and has both part time and full time classes.

Aveda Institutes

One of the biggest trends in the beauty industry is a focus on environmentally friendly products and ingredients that are beneficial for skin. The Aveda Institute has been ahead of this trend for many years with a large line of skin and hair care, salons and spas.

The Aveda Institute has branches in several states, teaches a balance of nutrition, health, skin care and wellness, and has a career program for trainees who graduate from the program and earn their state certification.
Visit the Aveda Institute website for more information.

Paul Mitchell Schools

While Paul Mitchell is best known for his line of hair products and salons, Paul Mitchell schools also offer cosmetology programs throughout the nation.

The program is based on the multiple intelligence learning theory of Howard Gardner, who believed that everyone has different strengths and ways of learning, including intrapersonal, interpersonal, musical, body kinesthetic, spatial and math logical intelligences.

The Paul Mitchell esthetician program gives students a quiz to help them identify their personal strengths and then allows them to structure their classes based on their personal strengths and interests.
In addition, the Paul Mitchell Skin Academy works with the International Dermal Institute and teaches both classic and cutting-edge skin care techniques.

Empire Beauty Schools

Empire Beauty Schoolshave branches in many different states and teach classes in the areas of waxing, facials, makeup and body treatment.
The school offers part time and full time courses and offers financial aid to those who qualify. In addition, Empire Beauty Schools work with Regis Corporation to help place graduates at Regis-brand salons throughout the nation.
For more information, visit the Empire Beauty School website.

Atelier Esthetique

The Atelier Esthetique Institute of Esthetics was the first internationally recognized member of the International Therapy Examination Council and has both a licensing program as well as a postgraduate program.
The program is based in New York City and has state licensing, laser technique, waxing, advanced and paramedical programs and other esthetician programs.

If you are considering a career as an esthetician, spend time researching schools and choose wisely to help ensure a long lasting career in the skin care industry.

As part of our series on the major cities in the United States, in this article, we look at esthetician schools in Dallas. In keeping with our usual pattern, we first analyze the city’s beauty services industry. We then look at the requirements to obtain an esthetician license in Dallas. Finally, we turn our attention to the topic of this article, esthetician schools in the city.

Introduction

Dallas, the third largest city in Texas and the ninth largest in the United States had a population of 1,197,816 according to the US Census 2010. The city has the third largest concentration of Fortune 500 corporations in the United States, The city’s economy is led by banking, telecommunications, technology, trade, oil and transportation. The city also has a major inland port and multiple rail roads, both of which facilitate the city’s trade and commerce.

Dallas’ personal care services industry is well developed. Several factors aid its growth, not the least of which is the city’s high per capita income. A career in this industry in Dallas is therefore not a bad idea at all. Esthetics holds as much, if not more, potential for career growth in the city as cosmetology, spa therapy or nail technology.

Esthetician license in Dallas

As with the rest of Texas, estheticians have to obtain a license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to practice in this state. The license is issued to those who pass an examination conducted by the Department which tests the candidates’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills. To apply for the esthetician license, a candidate must have completed a 750-hour training program in an approved esthetician school. More information on licensure can be had from the TDLR website.

Accredited esthetician schools in Dallas

The Association of Skin Care Professionals (ASCP) is the premier agency accrediting esthetician schools in Dallas. Schools accredited to this agency are considered to maintain high standards of quality in their training. The agency periodically audits the accredited schools to ensure that they maintain the prescribed standards. There are only three ASCP-accredited esthetician schools in Dallas as of writing this article. However, there are seventy eight accredited esthetician schools in the whole of Texas. Aspiring estheticians from Dallas thus have plenty of training options if they are willing to move out of their city. Below given are the three esthetician schools in Texas.

1. Contessa ROL Beauty College
Dallas, TX 75216-6738
Tel: 214-371-6213

2. Ogle School of Hair, Skin & Nails
Dallas, TX 75214-2692
Tel: 888-820-4224

3. Ogle School of Hair, Skin & Nails-North Dallas
Dallas, TX 75248-1216
Tel: 888-820-4224 or 217-743-7700

Prospective students should evaluate these schools mainly in terms of the quality of their teachers and the infrastructure. As all schools follow more or less the same curriculum, it is the quality of teachers and the support infrastructure that determine the quality of training one receives from a school.

We now look at esthetician schools in Louisiana in the broader context of the state’s personal care services industry. The article first analyses the factors that shape the course of the industry. It then discusses the requirements to obtain an esthetician license in Louisiana. The list of accredited esthetician schools given in the end will help aspiring estheticians in Louisiana to locate a training institution that matches their needs.

Introduction

The southern state of Louisiana had a population of 4,533,372 as of the US Census 2010. New Orleans, the largest city in Louisiana had a population of 343,829 as of 2010. The state of Texas borders Louisiana on the west, Arkansas on the north, the state of Mississippi on the east and the Gulf of Mexico on the south.

The gross state product of Louisiana was $213.6 billion in 2010, putting it at the 24th position in the US. Its per capita personal income of $30,952, ranked Louisiana 41st among the states. The state’s population comprises a mix of ethnicities with African Americans, Cajuns, Creoles and Hispanics making up substantial sections of the population.

Coming to the personal care services industry of Louisiana, it is naturally not of any substantial size. For example, according to the May 2010 State Occupational and Employment Statistics published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were just 2,570 cosmetologists/hairstylists, 310 nail technicians and 290 skin care specialists (estheticians) in Louisiana. Correspondingly, beauty school numbers too are lower than average. The number of accredited esthetician schools in Lousiana are just eleven. For comparison, Califorina has 142.

This however does not mean that esthetics is an occupation with no prospects in Louisiana. As training institutions are also fewer, those graduating from them get enough placement opportunities.

Esthetician license in Louisiana

The Louisiana Board of Cosmetology is the agency that issues trade licenses to all beauty care practitioners. To get an esthetician license in Louisiana, the requirements set out for a candidate by the Board are as follows:

    – Must be at least sixteen years of age
– Have completed 10th grade education or equivalent
– Have completed 750 hours in an approved cosmetology school
– A pass in the State Board licensing examination
– Payment of prescribed fees.

For other details like licensure by reciprocity, endorsement etc. please visit the Board’s website.

There are eleven Association of Skin Care Professionals- (ASCP) affiliated esthetician schools in Louisiana. This national accreditation body’s accreditation indicates sufficient standards of training quality. Prospective students of esthetics in Louisiana can choose from among these schools for their esthetics training. It is preferable for students to evaluate multiple schools and choose the one that best fits their needs.

In this article, part of our series covering the major cities in the United States, we look at esthetician schools in Chicago. In an earlier post we covered esthetician schools in Illinois and this article largely draws upon its content. For those looking for information specific to Chicago, this will serve as a quick reckoner.

Introduction

Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States after New York City and Los Angeles. As of Census 2010, it had a population of 2,695,598. It is one of the world’s top ten Global Financial Centers. The city offers very good career opportunities in the beauty and personal care services industry. Estheticians will find Chicago an excellent place to set up their practice. The city’s overall affluence and its fashion-conscious population are the major factors that favor the growth of its personal care services industry.

Esthetician license in Chicago

As with other states, esthetics is a regulated occupation in Illinois. To practice as an esthetician, you need to apply to the Illinois Division of Professional Regulation and pass the licensing examination. To apply for an esthetician license , the following requirements need to be met:

1. Minimum age of sixteen years.
2. Minimum education of eighth grade or equivalent. Those without this should take an Ability to Benefit test.
3. Completion of 750 hours of training from an approved esthetician school.

The examination comprises both written and practical tests and assesses the candidates’ ability to perform the basic esthetics services independently.

Illinois has reciprocity arrangements with several states with similar or more stringent eligibility requirements than Illinois. The license is issued for a term of two year. For renewal, the esthetician must have completed continuing education requirements as specified by the Division. More information about licensing can be had directly from:

Division of Professional Regulation
320W. Washington Street, 3rd Floor
Springfield, IL 62786
217-782-8556

Accredited esthetician schools in Chicago

While there are a total of 42 accredited esthetician schools in the whole of Illinois, those within the city limits of Chicago number only seven. The following are the esthetician schools in Chicago accredited by the Associated Skin Care Professionals (ASCP). This national agency accredits esthetician schools only after a thorough audit of the schools in terms of the quality of their infrastructure, curriculum and faculty. The audit is done periodically to ensure that each school maintains the required standards. These accredited schools can therefore be considered as top quality training centers in esthetics.

In this post, discusses esthetician schools in Maryland. It initially gives a perspective of the personal care services sector of the state, by analyzing the main factors that shape its course. It then looks at the requirements for obtaining an esthetician license in the state. The list of esthetician schools is given in the end and this will help prospective students of esthetics in Maryland find a school that fits their requirements.

Introduction

Maryland in southern US, is a major center of life sciences, biotechnological research and food production. According to the US Census 2010, the state had a population of 5,773,552 which made it the eighth smallest state in the country. The two biggest cities in Maryland are Baltimore and Washington DC and they, along with their suburbs, are home to most of the residents of the state. Maryland’s personal care services industry is rather small and nowhere near New York or California in size. Nevertheless, the many salons, barbershops, beauty clinics and spas across the state, point to market that is by itself of a reasonable size. One favorable factor for the personal care services industry in the state is the higher proportion of urban population. A more urbanized population tends to be more fashion conscious and spends more on beauty care.

According to the State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates for May 2010 published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 430 employed estheticians in Maryland which is a comparatively good number for the population.

Introduction

Los Angeles is the second most populous city in the United States after New York city. It is also one of the most prosperous regions not just in the US, but the whole world. Los Angeles, the largest city of the state is in many ways the showpiece of California. The city is rightly associated with Hollywood and this has earned it the sobriquet “The Entertainment Capital of the World.” Several celebrities, both from the film and fashion worlds are proud residents of this city. Not unexpectedly, California leads the nation in matters beauty and fashion. The personal care services industry of Los Angeles is estimated to be almost as big as New York’s and worth millions of dollars. The city’s prosperity, its several celebrity residents who shape fashion trends and a cosmopolitan population exposed to the latest in fashion and beauty are the factors that contribute to this.

The industry draws its quality manpower from the large number of beauty schools spread across California. California’s beauty schools are known to be among the best in the country. Within the city limits however, beauty schools are far fewer. Accredited esthetician schools in Los Angeles number only 6 as against 142 for the entire state.

Looking for esthetician schools in Texas? This article has this information and more. It looks at the beauty services industry of Texas and how to get an esthetician license in the state, besides giving a list of accredited esthetician schools in the state.

Introduction

The south-central state of Texas is the second largest state of the United States, both by area and population. The two largest cities of Texas, Houston and San Antonio are also the fourth and seventh largest cities of the country. It is interesting to note that although Houston is often considered a desert state, only 10% of its land area is desert. As per the Census 2010, Texas had a population of 25,145,56.

Texas has an economy that is on a sound footing and it leads the country in many prominent industries including energy, petrochemicals, computer hardware, electronic goods, aerospace and biomedical. It has the second highest gross state product. The state has been the national leader in export income since 2002. Texas has a very strong agricultural base as well.

There is enough evidence that economic prosperity has a positive impact on the demand for personal care and related services in a region. Texas’s personal care services industry, as is to be expected, is quite large. For those aspiring for a career in the beauty industry Texas is a good option. A population that grows at over 20% between consecutive censuses and a strong economy that proved its resilience in the last recession will work in favor of job opportunities and wages. According to the May 2010 State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state had 25,570 cosmetologists/hairstylists and 2,520 skin care specialists (estheticians). The numbers further attest to the strength of the state’s personal care services industry.

Esthetician license in Texas

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation is the agency vested with issuing licenses in various beauty trades. To appear for the license examination, the candidates should have completed a 750-hour training program in an approved esthetician school in Texas. More licensure information can be obtained from:

In this post, we discuss esthetician schools in Michigan. We first look at the personal care services industry in the state and assess its potential. This is followed by a discussion on esthetician license in Michigan. Finally, we list the accredited esthetician schools in the state. Aspiring estheticians in Michigan will find this information useful in finding esthetician schools that match their requirements.

Introduction

The Great Lakes region state of Michigan is the eighth most populous one in the United States. As per the Census 2010 the population of Michigan was 9,883,640. In racial terms the population was 78.9% white, 14.2% African Americans, 2.4% Asians and 0.6% American Indians. The economy of Michigan is led by auto, food processing, information technology, aeronautics, military equipment, metals and furniture.

The recession in the early part of the decade, which got exacerbated by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks had a big impact on Michigan’s economy. The state’s economy is now on the recovery path. The state had an unemployment rate of 10.3% according to a report published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2010. As a result of the problems in the economy, the state’s beauty services industry has not kept pace with the growth in population of Michigan. With the economy recovering well, it is expected that the beauty industry too will grow and reach a strong position soon. As per the Occupational Employment Statistics, May 2010, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics put the number of employed estheticians in Michigain at 1040. By comparison, the number of barbers/cosmetologists/hairstylists stood at 12,090.

Esthetician license in Michigan

The Board of Cosmetology under the Bureau of Commercial Services is the agency vested with the authority of issuing esthetician and other beauty service licenses in the state. To appear for the esthetician license exam conducted by the Board, the candidate must be at least seventeen years of age, have a minimum education of ninth grade or equivalent, and have completed a training program of at least 400 hours in a licensed esthetician school in Michigan or alternatively have completed an apprenticeship for not less than 6 months under a master esthetician in a licensed cosmetology establishment that renders skin care services. More licensure information can be had from:

Board of Cosmetology
Bureau of Commercial Services
611 West Ottawa South, North Tower
PO Box 30018, Lansing, MI 48909
Accredited esthetician schools in Michigan

While the Board of Cosmetology allows the option of completing an apprenticeship to be eligible to appear for the esthetician license exam, training is the more preferred route. This is because a good training program imparts the right amount of theoretical knowledge of esthetics as well as cover subjects like customer communications, legal aspects and safety. For this reason trained estheticians are preferred over the others by employers. The list of licensed esthetician schools in Michigan is given below.

There are several reputed esthetician schools in Arizona. In this article, we look at them. We first look at the state’s beauty services industry and the licensure requirements for estheticians. The list of accredited esthetician schools in Arizona is given in the end. Prospective students of esthetics in Arizona will find this useful in selecting a good school for their training.

Introduction

The picturesque state of Arizona, once famous for its agriculture, manufacturing and mines, now boasts a developed economy that reflects the broad national changes. The job market of the state also has changed in keeping with the changes in the economy. Cosmetology and allied services including esthetics have a good demand here.

Getting an esthetician license in Arizona

The Arizona Board of Cosmetology is the agency in charge of personal care services in the state. Arizona is one of the states with well laid-out criteria for schools offering esthetician programs. Also, all beauty related services including esthetics can be offered only by practitioners licensed by the Board.

To apply for an esthetician license, the Board requires candidates to have at least two years of high school education or its equivalent and be at least 23 years of age. They also must have completed 600 hours of training from one of the accredited esthetician schools in Arizona.

Accredited esthetician schools in Arizona

There are twenty five esthetician schoools in Arizona, accredited by the Associated Skin Care Professionals. Accreditation by this national body reflects the quality of training offered by these schools. While all of them offer the basic license-preparatory esthetics program, a few also offer advanced training in esthetics. Contact the schools directly to get more information about their training and other details such as costs, duration etc.

This article looks at esthetician schools in California in the broader context of the state’s beauty and personal care services industry. It also discusses how to get an esthetician license in California. For prospective students of esthetics, the approved esthetician schools in California have been listed in the final section of this article.

An indication of its size is the fact that there are 142 accredited esthetician schools in California. This makes it as good a place as any to start your career a personal care service occupation. The demand for trained estheticians is expected to stay buoyant for another eight to ten years in California. California’s esthetician schools are rated among the best in the country with their advanced infrastructure and competent faculty.

The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology is the agency vested with the responsibility of issuing esthetician licenses in the state. To appear for the licensing exam, the candidate has to complete a 600-hour training program from an accredited esthetician school in California. More information about licensure can be had here.

We now look at online esthetician schools. Esthetician training involves as much, if not more practical work as theory classes. That being so, are online esthetician schools real? We find out in this article.

Introduction

An esthetician or skin care professional is trained to apply a range of procedures such as facials, body wraps and salt glows. Typically they start their career working in a salon or spa or by assisting a physician with skin treatments. Some of them after acquiring initial experience set up their own spa or salon and become self-employed. Most states require estheticians to be licensed. Estheticians have become an integral part of the salon and spa industry, where they offer exclusive skin care treatments.

Online esthetician training

Estheticians are required to obtain a license by appearing for a state licensure examination to practice in their state of choice. The examination assesses the candidate’s theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Typically a training program in esthetics has at least 600 hours of classwork comprising both theory and practice, that prepares the students for their respective state licensure examination. It is the requirement to demonstrate practical knowledge that makes a fully online esthetician program impractical.

However, this is not to say that online esthetics programs are non-existent. A few schools now offer online programs in pure esthetics or esthetics and cosmetology combined.

Online esthetician schools

Here we discuss three such online esthetician schools.

1. Virginia Institute School of Esthetics

This school’s esthetics program is perhaps unique, in that students are allowed to take a part of the course online while the practical work is conducted in classroom sessions. Virginia Institute of Esthetics is certified by the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia and is approved by the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology Esthetics Regulations. This means that students who complete their hybrid program are eligible to appear for the state board’s esthetician license examination. Prospective esthetics students who reside in and around Virginia Beach, Virginia can enjoy the convenience of learning from their home by enrolling in this program.

The Virginia Institute School of Esthetics
1554 Laskin Road
Virginia Beach, Virginia 23451
757-431-4526

2. Stratford Career Institute

This school offers an online program in esthetics and cosmetology that leads to a diploma. The course contents include fundamentals of skin and nail care, anatomy and physiology of the skin and makeup. Students are allowed unlimited contact with certified instructors via internet or toll free calls. The exams are conducted online.

Stratford Career Institute
8675 Darnley Rd
Town of Mount Royal, QC H4T 1X2
800-254-4070

2. Milady Online

This New York-based school offers distance learning programs in cosmetology, esthetics and other related topics of study. The esthetician program helps the students prepare for the board licensing exam in their state. Divided into 22 chapters, the course includes chapter exams and quizzes in subjects such as hair removal, basic facials, facial massage, general anatomy and physiology etc. The course also includes more than 900 sets of questions and answers that may be found on most state board examinations.

Milady Online
5 Maxwell Drive
Clifton Park, NY 12065
800-648-7450

Conclusion

The very nature of esthetics training makes pure online esthetician schools an impractical idea. Of the schools discussed, only Virginia Institute School of Esthetics offers a license-preparatory program in esthetics, but it is a hybrid program that can benefit only those residing near the school. The other two are fully online programs but they do not have a practical component and this makes them purely academic in nature.

In this article, we discuss esthetician schools in Utah. We first give a perspective of the state’s personal care services industry and look at the licensing requirements for estheticians. This is followed by the list of approved esthetician schools in Utah and their contact details.

Introduction

Utah in Western United States had a population of 2,763,885 in 2010 according to the year’s census. Most of the state’s population live around the Salt Lake City, making Utah the sixth most urbanized state in the US. According to the US population estimates, Utah was the fastest growing state in 2008. It has Arizona on the south, Colorado on its east, Wyoming on the northeast, Idaho on the north and Nevada on the west as its neighbors. Transportation, information technology and research, mining, and tourism are the major contributors to the state’s economy. With such favorable conditions, it is but natural that the state is a thriving center for personal care and beauty services. There are several beauty schools in Utah offering basic to advanced training in cosmetology, manicuring, esthetics and related fields. There are fifteen accredited esthetician schools in Utah as of writing this report.

Esthetician license in Utah

The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing issues two types of esthetician licenses – basic and master. To start practice as an esthetician a basic license is enough. To appear for the basic licensing exam, the applicant has to complete a 600-hour training in one of the state-approved esthetician schools in Utah. For the master esthetician license a 1200-hour training is required.

Esthetician education

Once you have completed high school, plan on enrolling in an accredited cosmetology school. Schools accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) meet the educational standards set by this national organization. Most of the programs lead to a certificate in esthetics. Enrolling in a reputed program and acquiring a solid education can prove to be valuable while entering this field.

Accredited esthetician schools in Utah
The following are the NACCAS-accredited esthetician schools in Utah as of writing this report. While some of them offer only the basic 600-hour training to prepared students for the state licensure exam, the others offer both 600 and 1200-hour programs, the latter making them eligible to appear for the master esthetician license exam.
